Explicit approximate controllability of the Schr\"odinger equation with a polarizability term

We consider a controlled Schr\"odinger equation with a dipolar and a polarizability term, used when the dipolar approximation is not valid. The control is the amplitude of the external electric field, it acts non linearly on the state. We extend in this infinite dimensional framework previous techniques used by Coron, Grigoriu, Lefter and Turinici for stabilization in finite dimension. We consider a highly oscillating control and prove the semi-global weak H2H^2 stabilization of the averaged system using a Lyapunov function introduced by Nersesyan. Then it is proved that the solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation and of the averaged equation stay close on every finite time horizon provided that the control is oscillating enough. Combining these two results, we get approximate controllability to the ground state for the polarizability system

Convergence of asymptotic systems of non-autonomous neural network models with infinite distributed delays

In this paper we investigate the global convergence of solutions of non-autonomous Hopfield neural network models with discrete time-varying delays, infinite distributed delays, and possible unbounded coefficient functions. Instead of using Lyapunov functionals, we explore intrinsic features between the non-autonomous systems and their asymptotic systems to ensure the boundedness and global convergence of the solutions of the studied models. Our results are new and complement known results in the literature. The theoretical analysis is illustrated with some examples and numerical simulations. The paper was supported by the Research Centre of Mathematics of the University of Minho with the Portuguese Funds from the "Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia", through the Project PEstOE/MAT/UI0013/2014. Oscillations in low-dimensional cyclic differential delay systems

    Get PDF
Nonlinear autonomous N-dimensional systems of cyclic differential equations with delays and overall negative feedback are considered. Such systems serve as mathematical models of numerous real world phenomena in physics and laser optics, physiology and mathematical biology, economics and life sciences among others. In the case of lower dimensions and sufficient conditions are derived for the oscillation of all solutions about the unique equilibrium. Open problems and conjectures are discussed for the higher dimensional case and for more convoluted sign feedbacks. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG

Dual-gated bilayer graphene hot electron bolometer

Detection of infrared light is central to diverse applications in security, medicine, astronomy, materials science, and biology. Often different materials and detection mechanisms are employed to optimize performance in different spectral ranges. Graphene is a unique material with strong, nearly frequency-independent light-matter interaction from far infrared to ultraviolet, with potential for broadband photonics applications. Moreover, graphene's small electron-phonon coupling suggests that hot-electron effects may be exploited at relatively high temperatures for fast and highly sensitive detectors in which light energy heats only the small-specific-heat electronic system. Here we demonstrate such a hot-electron bolometer using bilayer graphene that is dual-gated to create a tunable bandgap and electron-temperature-dependent conductivity. The measured large electron-phonon heat resistance is in good agreement with theoretical estimates in magnitude and temperature dependence, and enables our graphene bolometer operating at a temperature of 5 K to have a low noise equivalent power (33 fW/Hz1/2). We employ a pump-probe technique to directly measure the intrinsic speed of our device, >1 GHz at 10 K.Comment: 5 figure
